REGISTERED ANTIQUITY – NON-EXPORTABLE ITEM.

Object Detail

HASTINGS WARREN: (1732-1818) Governor-General of India 1773-85 who, with Robert Clive, is credited with laying the foundation of the British Empire in India. A.L.S., Warren Hastings, two pages, 8vo, n.p. (Daylesford), n.d. (the paper bearing a watermark of 1813, although the letter written between 1814 and 1818), to Louisa, Lady Reade (´My dear Madam´).

Hastings commences his letter by stating ´Mrs. Hastings has assigned to me the most disagreeable of all commissions, that of acquainting your Ladyship that she is under the necessity of giving up the pleasure which she had promised herself with her acceptance of your kind invitation to dine with you and Sir John on Wednesday next´ and continues to explain ´She was siezed, immediately after breakfast, yesterday morning, with a violent spasm in her stomach, and obliged to return to her bed for her relief. She has suffered frequent repetitions of this disorder since she has returned to the country, but this has been much the most severe, and attended with a considerable degree of fever, so as to make her dread a relapse from an exposure to the air, from the motion of an uneasy carriage´.

With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by a near-contemporary paper wrapper annotated´ Letter from Warren Hastings to Lady Reade´.
